Teflon-coated orthodontic wires (often PTFE-coated) are aesthetic, low-friction alternatives to metal, designed to blend with teeth and reduce resistance during tooth movement. They are commonly used in aesthetic, esthetic, or clear braces to minimize visibility. They offer lower friction and smoother surfaces than uncoated wires, but may degrade in durability over time. 

 

Aesthetics: The Teflon coating provides a white or tooth-colored coating, reducing the visibility of traditional metal wires, often used in conjunction with ceramic brackets.

Low Friction: Studies indicate that Teflon-coated archwires can significantly reduce the resistance to sliding (RS) compared to uncoated wires, aiding in tooth movement.

Reduced Roughness: Teflon coatings often result in a smoother surface compared to standard uncoated stainless steel.

Types: Available for both stainless steel ligatures and Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) archwires.

Durability Issues: While they offer aesthetic benefits, Teflon coatings can be prone to peeling or degradation, especially after long-term oral exposure or exposure to certain mouthwashes
